Helping emerging creatives

We’re here to empower Tasmania's next generation of creative talent. Through training and support, Apple Box Studio aims to grow and develop industry pathways into film & television, theatre, games, and audio, to help emerging practitioners build a vibrant career.

We are an independent, not-for-profit organisation with a vision for a sustainable Tasmanian creative industry - that is an industry that operates year round, creating Tasmanian projects using Tasmanian people and their ideas, fused with incoming projects that chose to use Tasmania as their backdrop. Apple Box Studio aims to fill a crucial gap, ensuring that emerging creatives across the state receive essential guidance, mentoring and professional development to reach their potential.

Why are we called Apple Box Studio?

The name Apple Box Studio has a few meanings:

  • An apple box is a wooden item used on a film set to give crew or cast a height advantage, effectively giving them a ‘step up’, and as we are aiming to give crew a step up, it seemed only fitting.

  • Apples are synonymous with Tasmania, as we are known as the Apple Isle.

  • We like to think outside the box, offering opportunities that often don’t follow a standard pathway.

We chose the name ‘Studio’ because we will be helping people to make content and to create artistic projects, such as short films, stage plays, podcasts, audio dramas and games.

We hope you like the name as much as we do!

Big ideas for the Apple Isle

We are committed to cultivating a thriving creative industry in Tasmania

Our island state is a beautiful place to live and work, and we aim to provide opportunities for creative practitioners across the state. Our board is made up of locals who are thriving in their chosen sector and are passionate about helping others to do the same. We are looking to collaborate with individuals and organisations across Tasmania and Australia, and we welcome new connections.

Bridging the gap between high school and the broader arts industry

Following on from the great work of Wide Angle Tasmania, and expanding beyond film to include the game development sector, audio, and the performing arts, we recognise that there are many ways to enter a career in the creative arts, and for some, traditional educational pathways are not the best option. We focus on offering hands-on training, mentorship, and industry connection. Our programs and initiatives are designed to appeal to a broad sector of the community wishing to ignite and fuel their creativity. We want to empower Tasmania’s emerging creatives, helping them to develop their skills and networks, and realise their potential, strengthening a sustainable and vibrant arts community.
